Can Christians Go to Therapy? Let’s Talk About It

Where Does This Hesitation Come From?

In many Christian communities, there’s been a long-standing stigma around mental health. Some were taught that depression, anxiety, or trauma were signs of spiritual weakness—or even sin. Others were encouraged to “pray it away,” “just trust God,” or “think more positively.”

Prayer and Scripture are incredibly powerful tools for healing, it is also true that God provides additional forms of support.

Just like you’d go to a doctor for a broken leg, you can go to a counsellor for a wounded heart or mind.

What the Bible Actually Says

The Bible doesn’t condemn seeking help—it encourages wisdom, counsel, and care for the whole person.

  • “Plans fail for lack of counsel, but with many advisers they succeed.” (Proverbs 15:22)“

  • Carry each other’s burdens, and in this way you will fulfil the law of Christ.” (Galatians 6:2)

  • “The Lord is close to the brokenhearted and saves those who are crushed in spirit.” (Psalm 34:18)

Therapy can be one of the ways God draws near to the brokenhearted—through the presence of a trained, compassionate listener who helps you make sense of your pain.

Faith and Therapy Can Work Hand-in-Hand

Going to therapy doesn’t mean abandoning your faith—it means stewarding your mental, emotional, and relational health. It’s a space where you can:

But Isn’t Jesus Enough?

Yes—Jesus is more than enough. But that doesn’t mean we don’t need support. Jesus is enough and He often works through people.

    •    Jesus healed through relationship, presence, and compassion.

    •    He encouraged rest, retreat, and wise counsel.

    •    He validated emotions—He wept, grieved, and felt anguish.

Seeking therapy doesn’t replace Jesus. It invites Him into your healing journey in a tangible way.
